Plant Based Health and Weight Loss Reboot
As some of you may know, I have been following a whole food plant based diet for a year now! Yesterday marked one full year. I want to share with you my experience on this journey.
I decided to try this way of eating as an experiment of one. It soon became an experiment of two when Byron my husband got on board too! I wanted to see how much it would help with lowering my cholesterol, lowering my thyroid antibodies, lowering my blood pressure and lowering my weight! I had been hearing from a number of patients and friends about the benefits of this way of eating, and as a physician I’m always curious to try new diets. And so I dove into it full force Feb 1st 2017.
I started out 62 pounds heavier, BP at 142/94, high cholesterol (284 at it’s worst) and blood sugar in ranges considered “pre-diabetic”). I knew I had to make a change to prevent health problems on the horizon, so I was very motivated to improve my health. Like many of you, I got caught up in what I’ve started referring to as “The Pleasure Trap” after reading a book with that title by Dr Doug Lisle and Dr Alan Goldhamer. The theory is that the reason it is so hard to eat healthy is due to the strong addictive pull from rich, processed, hyper-palatable foods like sugar, oil (fat) and salt that gives our brains a dopamine hit that hooks you in and encourages over-eating. These foods really are addictive!
Dr Alan Goldhamer says “Good health comes from healthful living…and the focus should be on diet, sleep, exercise…. If you want to get healthy you have to pay the price of healthy living.”
Turning 51 made me realize that the “good life” of frequent indulgences in these rich hyper-palatable foods came at a price…. my health. It hit deep. And after all, I knew better!! I was ashamed to find myself overweight and in poor health. But I’m human, and I can get caught up in these things just like everyone else. Knowing and doing are two different things, right?
Anyway, at 51, it finally sunk in that over indulging in rich foods was pretty damned short lived, and left me with nothing to gain over time except weight and poor health. Sure, it was fun in the moment, but it was….a moment. Very short in the scheme of life.
At the one year mark, I can honestly say that changing my diet to a more health promoting way of eating is most definitely the best thing I have ever done and 100% no regrets. The payoff is MUCH bigger and better than I could have imagined! I have my health back! My blood pressure is now 100/60, Cholesterol 160, Glucose 82, HA1C 5.1 and my BMI is 22.5. My thyroid antibodies have dropped dramatically as well.
I enjoy better moods, a calmer more focused brain, and I feel a sense of inner peace I’ve never experienced before. And fitting into a size 4 is not a bad thing to adjust to either! And it’s not just about how great thinner feels, it is about how amazing it feels to be on a path that doesn’t lead to fearing for my health in my 60s and beyond! Priceless.
Byron Carrick, my husband and office manager, has his own story so I don’t want to speak for him, but he has surpassed my weight loss numbers by joining me on this journey the past year and is super fit now too! He is about to turn 50 feeling and looking fitter than any other time in his life. So inspiring and I’m super proud of what he has done.
Anyway, I’m sharing our story because many patients have been asking us how we lost all the weight, what we did, and if we can help others do it too. I resisted sharing this for a while because honestly, I didn’t want others (and especially my patients) to feel that I am trying to “convert” them. I totally respect and support other approaches and diets and I do not expect all my patients to eat this way. But at same time, I feel like shouting from the rooftops about this discovery I’ve made in finding something that worked so well for me as a health and weight loss reboot!! I’m confident it will work well for many others too. And so I want to share my success with others who are interested in learning more.
Earlier this week we launched a new medically supervised weight loss program called “Plant Based Health and Weight Loss Reboot”. Our new program is a 6 week long “reboot” to help people try out a whole food plant based eating plan and see for themselves what it can do. So much can change for the better in just weeks! Dramatic blood work improvements, drops in blood pressure and of course big drops in weight.
Before and after body composition measurements will be done, before and after bloodwork (lipid panel, blood sugar, inflammatory markers, thyroid antibodies if you have Hashimoto’s), before and after blood pressure will all be measured and tracked as part of the program. I wrote up a 20 page guidebook to help with recipes (favorites from past year) and lots of other tips and tricks for eating this way.
For those interested in giving this a try as a cleanse and health reboot, or a weight loss jump start…. just message us on here and we can tell you more about how it works or give us a call at 480-730-2755!
We also have a private facebook group for patients who join the program. We’re really excited to support and help others who want to give this a try. All you have to lose is weight, blood pressure and cholesterol!
So even if you feel like “I could never eat that way long term”, do yourself a favor….just add in more whole, unprocessed foods from nature like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds, potatoes and legumes and your body will thank you! Most of our nutrients come from these plant foods, and the average American diet falls woefully short on whole, unprocessed plant-based nutrient-rich foods. And, you’ll poop easier. You’re welcome. Try it out for 6 Weeks as a cleanse and see what you think!
